We all know the terrible feeling when we see our drink fall to the floor on our beautiful carpet. Or when we are painting a ceiling, and we see that paint drip to the floor, right where our tarp is not covering the carpet.

There’s no way to stop the drops, and the split second it takes to fall seems like an eternity.

Here’s a secret tip for on-site emergencies: sop it up with tons of water. That’s right, just plain old water.

If you do it quickly, before the stain sets in, water will dilute even tough paint spills, and you’ll be able to recover quickly.

Don’t be conservative with the water. Pour a small cup of water right on that stain. Soak up the water after a few seconds with paper towel. Then repeat. Don’t rub the stain, you don’t want it to set into the carpet. Just soak it up repeatedly.

An expert muralist in the Chicago area, who paints constantly in high-end homes, uses this technique. It has even recovered a gallon of paint (thankfully not full) that spilled in a residence.

If you can’t jump into emergency clean-up mode right away, the liquid has a chance to soak into the fibers of the carpet, and you’ll need reinforcements. If further effort of an at-home spot cleaner doesn’t work, you’ll have to move to industrial strength. If you don’t want to take the time yourself, or can’t physically handle a heavy, strong machine, consider calling Executive Green Carpet Cleaning if you are in the Chicago area. Executive Green is highly reputable, uses clean, green solutions and gets great results.
